What is ozone? |
Ozone is allotrope of oxygen and composed
of 3 oxygen atoms. It is in a form of vapor in normal
temperature, colorless in low density, and blue in density
of over 15%. In 0.015ppm density of ozone, its particular
odor can be felt, and its oxidation is 2.07V, which is
second highest to fluorine. By using this oxidation power,
we can oxidize organic and inorganic substances.
Ozone is colorless vapor always exists in a small amount(normally
0.01~0.03ppm) in the air, and not a special gas. Chemically
one substance ozone become particle with strong oxidation
by attaching one oxygen atom to one oxygen molecule. Ozone
has specific odor, and most people can smell it when it
is over 0.015ppm. Very low density(0.02~0.05ppm) ozone
and anion get formed when naturally high voltage is discharged
or plants in beach or deep forest, is doing photosynthesis.
Through these phenomena, ozone created in beach or deep
forest, let us feel the freshness. Like so, natural phenomenon
proves that earth can purify air with ozone and anion.

History of Ozone |
- In 1840, German scientist, Christian
Schonbein first found ozone, and named it from the Greek
letter "ozein", which means "smell".
- In 1845, French men De la Rive and Marignac acquired
ozone from electrical explosion of pure oxygen.
- In 1848, Hunt found out ozone is not a new substance
but is reformation of oxygen.
- Ozone related technology was developed rapidly after
Siemens of Germany developed ozone generating tube in
1857, and this tube is the beginning of electric discharging
ozone generator we are using now, and manufacturing model.
- In 1893, world's first ozone sterilization drinking
water facility was established(NETHERLANDS)
- In 1906, world's first ozone treated water purification
facility was established in France(NICE)
- In 1992, it is used in water purification facilities
in Tokyo, Okinawa, Osaka, etc.
- In 1995, 75% of American water treatment facilities
were using ozone treatment facility. Ozone became substance
that would replace the chlorine with its strong sterilization
and oxidation. It is applied in many different fields
industrially, and studied actively. |

Function of Ozone |
| Strong oxidizing substance, ozone was used
first in Nice, France at the end of 19th Century for sterilizing
drinking water. Ozone's oxidation and sterilization is
6 times larger than chlorine's that are used for sterilizing
drinking water. It kills germ, bacteria, virus, fungus
99.99% in 10 seconds. It is 3,150 times faster in sterilization
of coli, compared to chlorine. Therefore, leading countries
already used this ozone sterilization method in drinking
water purification facility. Ozone eliminates the odor
by combining with odorizing molecules, and resolves toxic
chemicals perfectly with unbelievable oxidation. And,
ozone goes back to purest oxygen after doing its job.

Ozone that protects life |
| 90% of ozone in earth is concentrated in
ozone layer in stratosphere, which is about 10~50km above
the ground. This ozone layer absorbs 95~99% of bad UV
ray from sun light to protect life of animals, plants
and human in this earth. This is one of the phenomena
that nature has shown us. Without this ozone layer, powerful
UV light reaches the ground, and human, animals and plants
will get skin cancer, and destroy the ecosystem. |

| Structure of atmosphere is divided into
troposphere, stratosphere, middlebrow, heat layer, and
outer space by the distribution of vertical temperature.
Troposphere is located at about 10~15km from ground. As
it goes higher, average of 6.5¡É per 1,000m decreases.
And with that, atmosphere becomes unstable, and convection
current is activated. Upto 50km from upper part of troposphere,
temperature keeps on getting higher to 0¡É. And in this
layer, vapor moves with molecular expansion, because of
low pressure, and forms stratosphere. In this stratosphere,
oxygen molecule is dissolved into two oxygen molecules
by strong UV light from sun light, and oxygen atom is
combined to oxygen molecule to create ozone. Ozone is
located at 25km from ground with most density, and we
call this layer ozone layer. |

Effect of Ozone(Ozone, is it bad for human body?) |
We often hear "ozone warning, ozone
alarm". This happens when ozone density in the big
cities are too high. This makes us feel that ozone is
not a good thing. Actually, ozone occurs chemical reaction
with active and strong oxidation, and irritates eye, lung
and respiratory organ. But, does ozone give our body only
bad effect? Is ozone just another polluted substance?
Ozone is not a substance that has only bad effect on human.
Ozone that is warned in city through ozone warning, is
created by chemical reaction of strong UV sun light with
many bad polluted substances like carbon hydrogen and
nitrogen dioxide. In this case, since there are a lot
of exhausted gas and oxygen atom containing pollution,
ozone is created from it. Actually, in a time like this,
it is more important to notice that there are so much
other polluted substances, which cause the creation of
ozone. It should be known that these bad substances can
create much more damage than ozone. Actually, other substances
have worse effect on respiratory organ than ozone. Ozone
resolves these bad substances, and goes back to oxygen.
We can see that since ozone warning only continues for
a very short period of time.
We can know the fact that ozone should not be considered
as polluted substance through the fact that high density
ozone occurs naturally. For example, according to the
statement of Ministry of environment in 1997, ozone density
in pure area, Taehwadong, Ulreungdo was much higher than
it was in big cities like Seoul or Busan many times. This
area is far away from port with toxic gas, and does not
even have a road. High density ozone was created naturally
when clean oxygen from forest received strong UV ray.
This naturally created ozone has little damage to body,
compared to ozone created in big city. Also, ozone exists
in ozone layer travels down to low atmosphere, and sterilizes
and purifies. When thunder strikes, ozone gets created.
We can feel this in clean air after raining. This ozone
is absorbed by soil with nitrogen. This is why rain helps
crops grow better than sprayed water. Like this, ozone
is created naturally and purifies the nature of the earth.
Besides, ozone has been known to help the body. Already
at the end of 19th Century, it was used as ozone gas and
liquid ozone. In a leading countries like Europe and U.S.,
ozone and oxygen are used to develop treatment technology.
It is because ozone and oxygen provide oxygen into cell
of human body to increase the resistance to diseases.
It is also used in steam sauna, pool and spa. It is even
used for treatment of cancer or AIDS patients.
Like so, ozone is a substance that can help us in many
different ways. So far, we know that ozone irritates eyes,
lung and respiratory organ, but unless ozone is directly
sprayed into eyes or respiratory organ for a long time
in a closed space, there is no problem. That is because
ozone is very active and unstable, and it goes back to
oxygen very quickly. Instead, it resolves polluted substances
and resolves oxygen in carbon dioxide for fresh air. Thus,
ozone is a very good substance to apply natural purification
function of the earth, when used well. |

Troposphere, within 10km from ground, rest
10% of ozone exists. Since ozone has strong oxidation,
when appropriate amount exists, it is used well for us
